We’ve been verifying Rolexes since 2017, but things improved when Alex (👆 👆 who is also presenting the video) joined our team in 2020, bringing +13 years of deep watch expertise with him.
Together, we’ve put together this ultimate authenticity-check guide, specifically made for the Rolex Datejust. A prestigious Rolex going for over $9.500[1], which is a true collector’s piece.
In this guide you’re going to find curated “real vs fake” images with pointers showing you the flaws on the fake, a video guide, a professional authentication service, and many other resources to help authenticate your watch.
Without any further ado, let’s begin.
Photos can flatter. A short human review protects you from a costly mistake.
Answer: The best way to check Rolex Datejust authenticity is to look the date wheel. Fakes always have the number misaligned.
Whether it’s a high-quality or a bad replica, that is guaranteed to be flawed.
However, this is just the short answer. Join me as I’ll take you through the detailed step-by-step analysis on how to spot a fake Rolex Datejust.

The date wheel is one of the most overlooked yet telling parts of a Rolex Datejust.
On authentic models, Rolex uses precise typography and movement calibration to ensure every numeral sits squarely in the center of the date window. The result is balance and legibility at a glance.
Counterfeits usually fail to achieve this. On fakes, digits are often shifted slightly up, down, or sideways within the window. The number “3” is a common example – in replicas, it drifts off-center and is paired with heavy or uneven printing.
These inconsistencies come from cheaper date wheels and less accurate calendar mechanisms.
When authenticating, use a loupe or macro photo to compare the thickness and placement of multiple digits. If the numbers vary in alignment or stroke weight, you are almost certainly handling a replica.
Want the expert's opinion? Let our Rolex authenticators check your watch:

The cyclops lens, positioned over the date window, is one of Rolex’s signature features. On a genuine Datejust, it enlarges the numeral so it fills the window with crisp definition.
Light reflections are controlled thanks to the anti-reflective coating, ensuring the date is easy to read in almost any lighting condition.
Fake watches rarely achieve the same clarity. Many replicas use poorly cut glass that fails to magnify properly, leaving the date looking too small or oddly distorted.
Others swing the other way, making the number appear oversized and thick, often with fuzzy edges. Misalignment between the cyclops and the date window is another frequent tell.
Collectors should tilt the watch under bright light and compare the legibility. A real cyclops keeps the number sharp and proportional, while a fake either under- or over-magnifies, often with distracting glare.
Since Tudor is Rolex’s sister brand, you may also want to read the Tudor authenticity guide for comparison.

The rehaut (the inner ring between the dial and crystal) is a detail Rolex owners often use as a quick authenticity check.
On a genuine Datejust, the engraved “ROLEX” pattern is consistent in depth and weight, and each word lines up precisely with the corresponding second marker.
This symmetry reinforces Rolex’s reputation for engineering perfection.
Replica watches frequently stumble here. Fakes tend to have heavier or shallower engravings, and the spacing between letters is uneven. In many cases, the words don’t line up properly with the second markers, creating an immediately noticeable flaw to anyone who looks closely.
Some counterfeits even skip the detail entirely.
When authenticating, tilt the watch in bright light to catch the engravings. Genuine rehaut text appears sharp and well-proportioned, while fake text looks clumsy, off-center, or laser-etched without the proper depth.
Other relevant guides: Rolex Day-Date, Rolex GMT-II.

The date-changing mechanism is a signature of Rolex precision. On a genuine Datejust, the switch happens in a single, crisp motion at midnight.
Even when winding the watch manually, the date will flip instantly as the hour hand crosses 12. This quick change is part of the brand’s engineering identity.
Fakes often expose themselves with sluggish date wheels. Instead of snapping, the digits crawl into place over minutes or even an hour, breaking the illusion of Rolex accuracy.
This delay comes from cheaper movements that cannot replicate the instant-change mechanism.
To check, wind the watch slowly past midnight. An authentic Datejust flips immediately at 00:00. If the change drags or hesitates, you are likely handling a counterfeit.
Authentic Rolex quality always stands out from fakes[2]. No matter what!

Rolex puts significant effort into its dial colors, especially on the Datejust where variety is part of the model’s appeal.
Genuine blue dials are light, vivid, and shift slightly under natural light, while silver dials carry a refined metallic sheen that stays elegant in different environments.
Counterfeits rarely capture this finesse. The “blue” on fake Datejust watches is usually much darker, almost purple or indigo, which makes the dial look lifeless.
Silver replicas often lack the depth of Rolex’s sunray finish, looking like plain paint rather than a premium metallic surface.
Collectors should always compare color under daylight. If the blue feels too heavy or the silver lacks reflective richness, it’s a clear warning sign of a replica.
Just like the Rolex Daytona authentication guide, the Datejust also shows how dial details can reveal a fake.

The lume is a functional and visual hallmark of Rolex watches. On the Datejust, authentic Chromalight lume glows a distinct blue after being charged under natural or artificial light
The glow is strong, even across all markers, and lasts for hours without noticeable dimming.
Replicas often fail in this area. Many fakes use cheaper lume paint that emits a pale green glow instead of blue. Others may glow blue at first but fade quickly, revealing their inferior materials.
Uneven application can also make some markers brighter than others.
To test, expose the watch to a flashlight for 30 seconds, then step into a dark room. A genuine Datejust will show a steady, vibrant blue, while a fake may appear patchy, dim, or the wrong shade entirely.

The sunburst finish is one of Rolex’s most admired dial treatments. On a genuine Datejust, the effect is striking: when light hits the surface, you can see fine radial lines that shimmer and shift, making the dial appear dynamic.
This gives the watch a sense of depth and luxury even in casual settings.
Counterfeits struggle here because creating a true sunburst dial requires specialized finishing techniques. Fake Datejust watches often have painted dials that look flat, or they attempt an imitation that appears too faint and artificial.
Even when replicas manage some reflection, it lacks the vibrancy and precision of Rolex’s work.
When authenticating, tilt the watch slowly in natural light. A real Datejust will give off a crisp, radiant sunburst effect, while a fake will look dull or forced.

Rolex’s solid end links are a hallmark of quality, providing both durability and seamless integration between bracelet and case. On an authentic Datejust, the end links sit tightly against the lugs, creating a continuous line without rattling or movement.
Replicas often fail to replicate this tight fit. Many fakes show small but obvious gaps where light can shine through. The edges may be uneven, and the bracelet can rock slightly if pressed.
These issues are not just aesthetic, they also compromise the structural integrity of the watch.
Collectors should always inspect the bracelet-to-lug junction under direct light. A genuine Datejust has a flush, precise connection, while a fake often betrays itself with visible space and rough finishing.

The bezel is one of the most iconic elements of the Rolex Datejust. Genuine fluted bezels are crafted in precious metals and finished to perfection, giving them a mirror-like brilliance.
When light strikes the bezel, the facets sparkle evenly, adding elegance and depth to the watch’s presence.
Counterfeiters rarely get this right. Fake bezels often look flat or rounded, with fluting that lacks depth and sharpness.
Under light, they appear dull or uneven, missing the signature sparkle that collectors know well. This is one of the hardest features to copy, since it requires precision cutting and premium materials.
When inspecting, gently rotate the watch under strong light. If the bezel does not gleam with crisp, symmetrical reflections, it’s likely a replica.
Collectors often compare the Datejust with Patek’s dress watches, so our Patek Philippe authenticity guide is another useful resource.

The bracelet is essential to the Datejust’s identity. The Jubilee bracelet, introduced with the Datejust in 1945, remains iconic, while the Oyster bracelet offers a sportier alternative.
Both are executed with Rolex’s exceptional finishing, providing a balance of comfort, weight, and sturdiness. The links feel solid, the clasp shuts with confidence, and the polish/brushing transitions are flawless.
Replicas often expose themselves through poor bracelet quality. Hollow or lightweight links make the watch feel off, while misaligned end links and rattling noise highlight inferior construction.
Even when fakes attempt a Jubilee design, the articulation is stiff or sloppy, lacking Rolex’s refined engineering.
If you’re checking authenticity, always handle the bracelet. The tactile feel (smooth articulation, solid weight, and precise finishing) is impossible for counterfeits to replicate convincingly.
If you want the fast version, here are the points collectors check first when separating a genuine Datejust from a counterfeit.
These checks will expose most replicas quickly. For certainty, always compare against reference images or use a professional authentication service.

If you want a quick visual reference, I recorded this walkthrough of the Datejust 41, reference 126334, where I compare an authentic piece to a high-quality replica. It is useful if you are meeting a seller, short on time, or need a clear look at the key tells before a full authenticity-check.

we will offer you those tails in the in this video guide in order to further assist you to differentiate the replica items from the genuine items
Guess which is the authentic watch
so right here in my hands i’ve got an authentic rolex digest worth more than 10k usd and one of the best fakes of this watch which costs about 500 usd
i’m gonna challenge you to pause this video right now and let me know in the comments which one’s the authentic one and why in a few seconds i’m gonna tell you the answer so stop it right now if you wanna join me and play this game
after that we’re gonna have a deeper dive into how to tell the fake from an authentic as we’re expanding our library of fake versus real comparison guides for watches
and if you’ve chosen this one then you are right stick with us to find out why
Rundown of the entire video
now we’re going to give you a quick rundown on what we will cover in the video guide we will cover nine steps and we will start with the first step which is about the date we’ll make sure that the number representing the date is perfectly centered in the date wheel
the second step above the cyclops lens make sure that the lens magnifies perfectly the date in the date wheel and also it has its anti-reflective coating available
for the first step you will need to take a look at the rihot engravings and make sure that all those engravings are perfectly aligned with the minute markers
the fourth step we’re going to take a look at how the watch flips its date so make sure that when you’re trying to wind the watch or set the date manually the watch instantly flips its date at midnight
for the fifth step we’re going to take a look at the dial color and we’re going to make sure that the song burst dial effect is present on the genuine item
for the sixth step you will need to verify how your watch glows in the dark this is about the loom that’s present in the watch and the fact that you need to be able to comfortably read the time even in a dark environment
for the next step the seventh step we’re gonna take a look at the watchy solid end links and how those have to be perfectly linked between the bracelet and the watch with no gaps between the links on the bracelet and the watches locks
for the eighth step we’re gonna take a look at the basil and you will see how the light has to perfectly be reflected from the fluted basil
for the ninth step and the last step we are going to check the bracelet on the watch as well as the engravings on the clasp other design elements present there
Side-by-side of the two watches
the left side in the video you can see the the genuine item the one with the roman numerals while on the right side you can see the replica item this is the top replica item so it’s pretty hard to differentiate this item from the genuine one unless you have some knowledge about it and of course it’s even better if you have both watches one next to another in order to to easily see the details on the watches
Tell #1 – Date Wheel
the first style that we’re going to discuss about is the date wheel on both watches the genuine always has the number that says the date has this number perfectly centered in the date wheel what we call the date wheel and of course you can see it if you’re gonna magnify it through the cyclops lens
you can see the number perfectly centered in the in the middle on the replica items most of the times the number is not perfectly centered as well as the font is not perfectly replicated
from the genuine item this means that it’s either bolder i mean the font is a bit bold this takes us to the second tell which is the
Tell #2 – Cyclops Lens
cyclops lens the cyclops lens on the genuine item perfectly magnifies the date present on the date well while on the replica sometimes the magnifier doesn’t work that good
because it’s a cheaper material it’s not treated with an anti-reflective coating so it might reflect much more easily sunlight while on the genuine item because of this anti-reflective coating you will perfectly see the date and you will barely see any any sunlight in it
of course depending on the angle that you’re you’re holding the watch
Tell #3 – Rehaut Engravings
the third tail when it comes to the rolex digest is the rihot engraving the rehot is the inner circle next to the dial under the crystal is the gray area where you can see the engraved the the rolex letters spaced between them equally spaced as well as the crown at 12 o’clock and the serial number of the of the watch present around six o’clock on the genuine item
the engravings are perfectly centered with the with the minute markers the rolex crown at 12 o’clock will also be perfectly centered at the 90 degrees angle with the middle of the watch while on the replica one most of the times it might be some dials might be aligned with the with engravings however
if you take a look at the entire circle at some points you might notice some letters that are not engraved centered with the minute markers
Tell #4 – Flip The Date
the fourth tail we’re gonna discuss about how the watch flips the date at midnight actually when the date changes at midnight the genuine item will always instantly flip the date while on the replica item you will notice that most of the times the date starts smoothly flip at i don’t know around 11 55 and stops sleeping and turns to the next date the next day at about 1205
so you you have to keep an eye on this as well another important notice when it comes to distill is that this will happen this will be available also when you will try to manually wind the watch
so if you try to change the date manually you will notice that on the genuine item it instantly flips when you go about midnight while on the replica one it smoothly flips as you smoothly wind the watch and change the change the minute
guys for the fifth hour we’re gonna inspect the the dial on the on the watch and the sun
Tell #5 – Dial Colour
burst effect on the genuine item you will always uh have this special rolex sunburst effect meaning that uh the light that comes onto the dial gets reflected in a very nice way on the dial
if you’re gonna hold it in your hand and rotate it like this you can have a full overview of this effect that i’m telling you about
on the replica items some of them like this one this top replica one have a nice sunburst effect there but of course if you’re holding it one next to another if you get the chance you can totally feel the difference
in case i don’t know anything doesn’t look good to you and looking at the dial and expecting the sunburst style effect it might be the case that you’re holding a replica item in your hands
so pay close attention to the way the light reflects from from the dial as well till number six is about how your watch glows in the dark and actually the lume
Tell #6 – The Lume Effect
the chemical treatment that’s applied on the dial on the minute markers as well as on the hour and the minute hands
how they reflect in the dark of course on the genuine item you can easily spot the hands and the dials in the dark while on the replica once because they use cheaper materials cheaper chemicals actually you won’t spot it that easily
again if anything seems suspicious when you’re trying to check the time in the dark it might be the case that you’re holding a fake item in your hands
on the genuine item you will always easily read the time no matter how dark is in the room as long as the loom is is charged
Tell #7 – Solid End Links
the solid end links are those links that actually link the bracelet with the watch so the solid then links are those end links as the name says it here below the six o’clock marker as well as those above the 12 o’clock marker
if you inspect them on the genuine item those solidan links will always be perfectly linked with the watch with no gaps between them with no sunlight that can go through them between the between the lugs and the and the links
while on the replica watch some of the times you will have gaps like here at 12 o’clock on the right hand you can see you can easily see that you you kind of have a gap that’s that’s not symmetrical with the one on the left hand furthermore it’s it’s pretty wide this doesn’t have to happen on on a genuine item
Tell #8 – Bezel
for the eighth step on our guide on our video guide we’re gonna discuss about the basil the basil is the is the outer circle on the dial uh which is actually known as the fluted basil
in this case for the rolex digest uh depending on the material used it reflects the light in a more let’s say elegant way than the replica one
of course the high quality materials used in the rolex datejust genuine item perfectly and elegantly smoothly reflect the light whatever the source of light might be
while on the replica item in some cases because of the cheaper materials of course the light will not be reflected in such an elegant manner
Tell #9 – Bracelet
for the ninth step and the last step in our video guide on how to spot differences between a rolex datejust fake item and the genuine one we’re gonna discuss about the bracelet as well as the clasp on the watch
uh when it comes to the bracelet the jubilee bracelet which is actually the standard bracelet offered for the for the rolex digest has to be perfectly manufactured with high materials high quality materials very flexible and easy to maneuver
also regarding the clasp engravings you will find the rolex logo engraved on the clasp as well as the geneva and swiss made engravings on the other side of the inner clasp you can find another logo of rolex the steel enox inscription and the coat the bracelet coat
those have to be perfectly engraved in the same depth and with the same style
on the replica item this is a very nice bracelet it’s pretty close to the to the genuine item unless you’re holding both of them in your hands it’s pretty hard to tell even from this video guide
the difference is it’s actually more of a feeling difference however when it comes to the engravings on the inner clasp you can easily notice and we will show you a close-up picture of those the engravings are not done in the same manner as on the genuine item
it’s actually the depth of the engraving as well as the letters themselves and the other designs
Outro
guys thank you so much for watching us i hope the tails that we presented today will be useful for you and please don’t forget to subscribe to like and share our video and of course don’t forget to leave us a comment with whatever watch model you would like us to cover in the future because we’ll be we’ll be doing more of this and we’ll be adding more videos see you soon bye

Our authentication service gives collectors clarity. Every Datejust is inspected in detail by specialists with years of hands-on experience. No shortcuts, no automated scans. Just expert analysis that has protected thousands of buyers worldwide.
What we look at on a Datejust goes far beyond surface checks:
The outcome is more than peace of mind. Our Certificate of Authenticity is proof you can lean on – whether for resale, insurance, or refund claims. In a market where Datejust replicas are improving each year, that certificate is often the line between protecting your investment or losing it.
👉 Get your Rolex Datejust authenticated today and secure the certainty your watch deserves.
The Datejust has always been more than a simple timepiece. Its presence on the wrist is defined by small but crucial details, from the snap of the date change at midnight to the brilliance of the fluted bezel. In this guide, we walked through the reference points seasoned collectors trust, showing how authentic models carry a harmony of finishing, precision, and feel that counterfeits cannot match.
Authenticity comes down to consistency. Genuine Datejust watches align their date wheels perfectly, show sharp rehaut engravings, glow with steady blue lume, and carry bracelets that feel substantial yet fluid. Replicas may look convincing at first glance, but once you test these features under light, by touch, or with magnification, their flaws begin to show.

Along with peace of mind, you will receive a Certificate of Authenticity you can use for resale, insurance, or disputes.

Photos can flatter. A short human review protects you from a costly mistake.
The serial number is one of the most reliable ways to verify authenticity. On older Datejust references, you’ll find it engraved between the lugs at 6 o’clock, hidden beneath the bracelet. On newer models, Rolex moved the engraving to the inner rehaut, visible through the crystal at 6 o’clock. Genuine engravings are sharp, evenly spaced, and aligned with the dial markers. If the text looks faint, sloppy, or off-center, it’s often a counterfeit sign. Cross-checking the serial against production years also helps confirm whether the watch’s details match its era.
On modern Rolex Datejust models, the serial number is engraved on the inner rehaut at 6 o’clock, visible through the dial side. On older references, you’ll find it between the lugs at 6 o’clock, hidden beneath the bracelet. The engraving should be sharp, consistent, and aligned – weak or uneven markings are a warning sign. Matching the serial to the correct production range can help you date the watch and verify that its details correspond to the right era.
The Submariner often tops the list as the most counterfeited Rolex, but the Datejust follows closely because of its popularity and range of designs. Counterfeiters target the Datejust because it has been in continuous production since 1945 and appeals to both men and women. Its variety of dial colors, bezels, and bracelets gives forgers many ways to disguise shortcuts. That’s why careful checks (especially of the date mechanism, lume color, and bezel finishing) are critical when assessing a Datejust.
Yes. A genuine Rolex Datejust is designed to be waterproof to 100 meters, thanks to its Oyster case construction and screw-down crown. However, waterproofing depends on the condition of the gaskets and crown seals, which should be checked and replaced during regular servicing. Counterfeit Datejust watches almost never achieve proper waterproofing, and even light exposure to water can damage them. If you are buying pre-owned, a pressure test by a watchmaker is the safest way to confirm the case integrity.
Investment value depends on factors like rarity, dial configuration, and demand. Classic stainless steel Datejust models with blue, silver, or champagne dials remain steady choices, while certain two-tone and fluted-bezel versions command premiums. Limited-production dials or vintage references with original parts are especially attractive to collectors. That said, authenticity is everything. A watch with a confirmed serial, documented service history, and a certificate of authenticity will always hold its value better than one with uncertain provenance.
